The Blockheads are dedicated to developing emerging actors, playwrights and directors - we intend to make it our mission to explore new ideas and support creativity wherever we find it. Last May, we hosted our New Works Festival for Emerging Playwrights at The Tank Theatre in Times Square, where we are currently an associate company. This mini-festival was the first part of our year long exploration of new writing. We've been seeking undiscovered playwrights with a passion for social justice; that can engage with a 21st century audience and challenge conventional ways of thinking.
This Fall, we are mounting, Pooka, a dark fairytale based in Celtic folklore, written by James McLindon. This will be Blockheads' very first new work to be produced. We are proud to be partnering with art director Madalena Parreira for UNIS (United Nations International School). We are ectastic to be partnering with such wonderful artists who are contributing their talents in our newest project. Blockheads' mission is to give a chance for youth in theater a chance to play; here's where it happens. A handful of exceptional art students will be creating the imaginative costume pieces for our Pooka, and original backsplashes for set design, under the guide and co-collaboration with Parrerira and her students. These hand-made pieces will then be offered in a silent auction with proceeds benefiting Safe Horizons–a local charity empowering victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
Pooka will be presented for a limited two-night engagement at The Tank Theater (151 W. 46th St. 8th Fl). Located on the corner of 46th and Little Brazil. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at or thetanknyc.org
